The eleven people arrested in connection to the Bingu death inquiry are expected to appear before court this afternoon after spending a day in police cooler. The eleven include DPP interim President, Prof Peter Mutharika, former Chief Secretary to the cabinet, Bright Msaka, whose job was terminated yesterday, Min of economic and planning Goodall Gondwe among other DPP members. However this morning hail broke loose at Lumbadzi Police Station following running battles between the police and angry DPP supporters who have spent a night guarding the arrested. The supporters were angry with what they think is demeaning treatment to Mutharika after they heard that their leader would be taken to court using police van. The supporters started pelting stones at the police and overpowered the them at the Police main gate. This resulted in a commotion and forced police to fire teargas and shoot in the air. Two people have been injured and one supporter has been taken by police. Meanwhile, Police have also been involved in running battles with other supporters in Lilongwe old town, Area 3, where teargas has been used. In Zomba DPP supporters were marching to the District commissioners office to present a petition on their disappointment on DPP leaders’ arrests. Supporters in other Districts and cities have also been expressing their anger. More to follow.
