Malawi’s Economic Planning and Development Minister, Goodall Gondwe has resigned. This comes as a result of his arrest in connection with the Bingu death inquiry report. He has been charged with treason and was given bail yesterday. Gondwe recently quit from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to join the new government of Joyce Banda. He also served in the previous government under late President Bingu wa Mutharika as a Finance Minister. His last position in the Bingu regime was Local Government Minister. He is regarded as the best performing Minister of Finance in Malawi’s recent history. This is definitely a big blow to the Economic Recovery Plan (ERP) that the Joyce Banda Administration is implementing to save Malawi from the current economic problems. His joining of the Banda government brought so much hope of recovery. It has been reported that he is rejoining the DPP. Gondwe worked with the IMF for a long time before retiring and joining Malawi politics.
