The government of Joyce Banda is reported to be about to arrest former First Lady, Callista Mutharika allegedly for ‘insulting’ President Joyce Banda when she protested against the arrest of the Democratic Progressive Party members who include her brother-inlaw Peter Mutharika, Interim President of the DPP. The arrest warrant comes hot on the heels of the arrest of former Ministers in the Bingu wa Mutharika government last week. In Malawi, President’s have used an archaic law that ‘protects’ the President from insults. The law is usually used to silence critics of the government. Malawians always take these arrests as mere trampling of the opposition or government critics. Going by the past reactions to such arrests, Joyce Banda should brace herself for another dose of heavy criticism against the way she is handling those that seem to be sympathizers of the opposition in Malawi. More to follow.
