Fuel price increase has been put on hold in order to let the celebration of one year in government by the Joyce Banda administration to take place. According to a meeting by government officials and Malawi Energy Regulation Authority (MERA), members have agreed to raise the petrol price to K780/litre any day. Fuel is the main determinant of commodity prices in Malawi. Prices will rise again due to this increase. With official inflation at about 40% and prices rising by over 100%, this adjustment adds more salt to the wounds of Malawians. It is obvious that the much talked about economic recovery is Joyce Banda’s dream shared with here cronies only and not common Malawians. It simply will not happen under the Automatic Price Mechanism for fuel as well as the floating Kwacha. Malawians should expect tough times as we approach election year.
