Cashgate trials that commenced on Tuesday, 28 January 2014, are underway at the Lilongwe High Court. The case has attracted the attention of almost all media organizations around the world. Over 30 media organizations have arrived in Lilongwe, Malawi’s Capital.
Over 70 people implicated in the Cashgate face criminal charges if the courts find them guilty. Most of the suspects, who are currently on bail pleaded not guilty to the charges. Top government officials, PP party die-hards and business men and women have been involved in the financial scam.
The trials are part of an agreement between government and the donor community to start prosecuting the suspects if $150 million meant for budgetary support is to be released. Cashgate is one of the high level cases that have happened in the People’s Party led regime.
